Doha: worst airport ever

Short Version:

Doha is probably the worst airport ever. I flew Qatar Airways (a very fine airline once you are inside the plane) toand from Kathmandu and had a 5-6 hour layover each way in Doha. It’s impossibly overcrowded, so couple the delirium of changing time zones, sleepiness, slight apprehension of going to Nepal for the first time and inability to find a place to sit/rest, multiply by 5 hours, and you get the idea.

Longer Version:

For those that don’t know, Doha is in Qatar, on the Arabian Peninsula. I landed and took off in the dark, so I can’t say much about the scenery. At the risk of being close-minded, I’d venture to say that they have a lot of sand and oil pumps.

The airline is pretty cool – the staff is multi-ethnic, they hire from all the countries they fly to, and they boast that they have 55 ethnicities working for them. That translates into a lot of people from South East Asia and, surprisingly, a clearly Russian attendant that I spotted in Doha. How she ended up there, no idea (actually, I have a couple. Probably by plane).

Back to the gripes about the airport – it’s just way too small to support the amount of traffic going through it. First, when you get off the airplane, you stand in a long 30-minute line to go through the security to get into the airport. That was my first sighting of men wearing traditional Arab dress. Pretty cool, and a little surreal.

Once you are past the security check, you have 3 options: go into the giant “duty free” shopping area that takes up most of the airport building, or walk around aimlessly in circles trying to find a place to sit. Alternatively, you can go upstairs, show your transit ticket to the next place, get a meal voucher and wait in line for a fairly mediocre “dinner” in a crowded fast-food type place, followed by jostling for a place to sit in their overcrowded café. And that’s the only dining option.

Once you are done with this so-called dinner, you go back to option #2: cruise the tiny waiting area trying to find a seat. At this point you are fighting against an army of people from the Asian continent who’ve been dealing with overcrowding and lack of personal space their entire life, so you stand no chance. If you try to be clever and pay your way into a first-class lounge (hey, it’s only $25!) you’d be disappointed. Apparently, “paid peasant access” is only available after 11:30pm – which in my case translated into 2 hours of waiting to get in. So no such luck. Only other option is to try and find a place to sit on the floor, as far away from the not-so-hermetically sealed smoking lounge as possible, and read a book.

So what’s the point of this rant? Ah yes, Doha (and Qatar airways) should triple the size of the airport, and put more chairs in. Another point? Don’t fly through Doha. Or get rip-roaring drunk on the first leg of your flight – I think that’s what the Nepalis coming from Kathmdandu on the way back were trying to accomplish

I couldn't agree more. Doha's airport is very small and crowded. However the new airport, once they complete it, will be able to handle 50+ million passangers per year. The current one will be demolished and turned into some sort of residantial area.

If your interested visit this website, www.ndiaporject.com. Cool pics of the new airport.

Haven't been to Bangalore personally yet, but my friends have - and they echo your sentiments.
I have, however, survived the "checkin rush" at the Air Deccan counter in Delhi, but that's a whole other story.
And yes, you are right, after India, one can survive anywhere...

I am Flying through Doha for the first time in 2 weeks. From the comments I am glad I am flying Business, which is by the way the same price as economy on Emirates now. I haven't been to India, but have been to Paris and that was the worst airport I have been to. I avoid at all cost. I hope Doha won't be as bad as most have said here.

DOHA airport is the worst ever airport in the world. The staff at the DUTY free staff are unfriendly and they don't know how to greet customers or atleast give a smile. Furthermore they are rude and unable to communicate in English. On top of that if you touch and see an item at the duty free shop and decideds not to buy the life is almost finished. The fierece look clearly tells that they are no more than monsters. If one is not lucky they will frame with false charges and take to the nearest police station to extract fines or imprisonment of upto 3 days. I used to transit DOHA mainly to save little $ but lately I have stopped such travel routes as it gives lots of inconvenience than comfort. I prefer DUBAI as the transit airport than DOHA...rgds...Raymond

As a business traveler I’m tempted to never go through Doha ever again but as a business travel it’s hard to not want to fly Qatar. It’s a strange case of the best airline in the Middle East having the absolute worst airport.

The strangest bit about the airport is we had to take a 48 minute (timed by a fellow passenger) bus ride from our arrival spot to the main terminal. I’m not sure if we taxied to Dubai but that was easily the longest transit I have experienced, made worse by the slowest moving bus I have ever been on. I found the customs line to be fast and efficient…but I’m a male. My fiancé who flew through Doha a couple weeks later said as a female she has no plans of ever going to Qatar again. She said she was stuck in a female only line with all the women and kids with one security inspector, even after all the men had cleared they wouldn’t allow women to go to through the other security lines. Needless to say if you’re a woman I would probably not consider Doha as a good transit point.

As an American the airport was fully up to US standards. Crowded, dirty, unreliable internet connections and employees who are more interested in updating their facebook profiles on their iphones (somehow they have internet) than helping you with anything. But if you are use to the modern airports of Southeast Asia and the rest of the Middle East, Doha is a bit of a shocker. If you have a long layover I strongly recommend sneaking food off of your Qatar flight since the airport could possibly have the worst food selection I have ever seen (maybe second worst if you count Hanoi) and yes I have been to several Indian airports (although I love Indian food so don’t have a problem with the one or two restaurants in many of their airports). At least in the US and Europe the airports may be outdated but they always have lots of food choices.

The other problem I came across (which is a problem in most airports outside of Japan and Korea) is finding a place to charge my computer and phone. All the outlets are almost always in use (even by airport employees!!!) so as soon as you get off your flight head for one of the big round posts as they sometimes have outlets near them…no guarantee they will actually provide electricity but you can pretend.

One thing you have to give the airport credit for is people watching. The place is bustling with military troops, sheiks, Texas oil men, Bangladeshi laborers, Philippine maids, African and Asian business men and European tourists all transiting to various places in the world. It doesn’t make the airport better…just more bearable.

So all in all Doha airport is bad but Qatar Airlines is worth it if you’re a male. If you’re a female I’ll go with my fiancé’s recommendation and suggest you fly Emirates or Ethiad if you are transiting through the Middle East.

Doha's old airport is still open and seems getting worse and worse. Im here right now and the only positive thing about to say is, that they give you free wifi. After 4 horrible hours of waiting, i can agree that this is the worst airport i have ever seen in my whole life ! Even the voucher is nothing worth anymore. Everywhere they tell you another story why you can't use it and where you have to go to do so. So FUCK YOU FOR A TERRIBLE stay in here. Im looking forward getting in to the plane soon.
